David Neil Schmitt, a devoted scholar, researcher, and avid sports fan, passed away from natural causes on October 16, 2025, just one day shy of his 66th birthday. Born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, Dave developed an early fascination with the natural world and the diversity of human cultures—interests that would shape both his studies and his life’s work. A proud graduate of Oregon State University, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and later completed a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Archaeology and Geography.
Dave spent the early part of his career researching the ancient peoples of the Great Basin, conducting extensive fieldwork throughout the region. His intellectual curiosity and deep respect for human cultures guided his career. For more than 20 years, Dave and his wife, Karen Lupo, conducted collaborative anthropological and archaeological research in the Central African Republic, contributing valuable insights to the field with dozens of published papers he authored or co-authored and building lasting relationships with local communities. Their partnership in both life and scholarship reflected a shared dedication to understanding humanity in all its depth and diversity. While pursuing his passion for research, Dave met Karen, the love of his life and a fellow scholar and adventurer. The two married on October 30, 1994, and shared a remarkable partnership grounded in curiosity, laughter, and exploration. Together, they traveled the world—visiting and conducting research in places as far-reaching as Malaysia, Tunisia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad, and much of Europe. Their journeys reflected not only their shared professional interests but also their deep appreciation for culture, history, and the beauty of the human experience.
Dave was a passionate supporter of Oregon State University football—his loyalty to the Beavers was unwavering, and he often sported the school’s bright orange colors. He also loved Major League Baseball, particularly the San Francisco Giants, and could often be found following the season’s stats or reminiscing about classic games. He loved any sport, including playing golf, and would frequently start up conversations about the latest sports news with a stranger who became a new close friend. Beyond sports, Dave had a lifelong affection for 1980s new wave music, the soundtrack to countless memories shared with friends and colleagues.
Dave was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Schmitt. He is survived by his father, Larry Schmitt; his brother, Marty Schmitt; his nephew, Joe Schmitt; his dear aunt Carol Pitts and her family; and his beloved wife, Karen Lupo, with whom he shared more than three decades of love, research, and adventure. Those who knew Dave remember his generosity, humor, and commitment to understanding the world in all its complexity. His work and spirit touched people across continents, and his memory will continue to inspire curiosity, compassion, and connection.
A memorial will be held on Sunday, November 16, at 2 p.m. at ArtCentre of Plano located at 902 E. 16th Street Plano, TX 75074. The memorial also will be live-streamed via facebook at Steven G.
