Hezekiah Gilbert was born on January 28, 1935, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Carrie Miller Gilbert and John Gilbert. He was raised alongside his brother, Gus Gilbert, in a loving home built on faith, strength, and perseverance.
At a young age, Hezekiah chose to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army during the German War from June 27, 1952 – June 11, 1955. His time in service reflected the heart of who he was—disciplined, compassionate, and devoted to caring for those he loved.
After his honorable service, Hezekiah—affectionately known as “Mr. G”—moved to Brooklyn, New York, to begin a new chapter. There, he became a pillar of his community, always ready with wisdom, laughter, and guidance. Known for his unmatched work ethic, Mr. G worked three jobs before establishing his own successful floor scraping and restoration business, a true testament to his determination and pride in hard work.
In Brooklyn, he met and married the love of his life, Tony “Toosie” Gilbert. Their union was filled with deep love, laughter, and strength through every challenge. They stood by each other through life’s highs and lows until Tony’s passing on May 8, 2021. Though her departure left a void, Mr. G held her memory close until his final days, longing to be reunited with her once again.
Hezekiah leaves behind two devoted children: Tyrone Gilbert, his proud son and friend in spirit. Gale Gilbert, his loving daughter and caregiver, who brought him to Dallas, Texas, to live out his final years surrounded by love.
He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Shaunna Rogers, Joshua Dubois, Joycelyn Dubois, and Karl Bazile, and his beloved great-grandchildren: Barnell, Zaire, and Janyrah Unique Bazile, whom he lovingly called “my sweet baby.”
Mr. G’s children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He spoke often of their accomplishments, their laughter, and the deep bond that kept their family strong through generations.
His Legacy Lives On
Hezekiah’s life was one of quiet strength, humor, and unwavering faith. To his family, friends, and community, he was a protector, a mentor, and a man of deep integrity. His final wish was to reconnect with his beloved wife in heaven and to see his family live healthy, prosperous, and united lives in his honor.
Though his physical presence has departed, his love, lessons, and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
