Tracy Tenise (Hanley) Johnson was born Sept. 16, 1964, in San Bernadino, CA. to the
Rev. John Handley and Elain Johnson Handley. The family relocated to Chicago after
Rev. Handley completed his service with the United States Air Force. After graduating
from St. Ignatius College Preo, Tracy attended the University of Illinois (Chicago) in the
pre-pharmacy program. In her junior year, Tracy transferred to Florida A&M University
where she pledged the Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She
graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She began her
professional career at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (now Tallahassee Regional
Medical Center) as the Nurse Preceptor, later she moved to Atlanta where she became
the Nurse Educator for the surgical ward at Georgia Baptist Hospital (Now known as
Atlanta Medical Center). While in Atlanta, Tracy also served her community as the
nurse at Daylight Inc., a domestic violence shelter, and mentoring students at
Kennesaw State University.
In 1997, Tracy returned home to Chicago to help her ailing mother until her passing.
After years of experience as a Utilization Review Nurse with several managed care
companies, she returned to her love of teaching and worked through the ranks to
became a Sr. Medical Management Trainer for Health Care Services Corporation (Blue
Cross Blue Shield).
During this time, Tracy married Major Johnson, II on October 28, 2000, at Sweet Holy
Spirit Church in Chicago. Soon after she and Major started a transportation services
company before moving to Plano, TX in 2013. They soon added puppies Pebbles and
Romeo to their family.
Tracey and Major joined several ministry groups while there and gathered a group of
friends. Sadly, Major died in 2014.
As Tracey continued her pursuit of nursing and attained the Master of Science in
Nursing Education in 2021. What’s more Tracey added another puppy, Coco, to her
family.
She also joined the Dallas Fort Worth Chapter of the FAMU Alumnae Association and
the Chi Zeta Omega Chapter of the AKA’s.
At the time of her passing Tracy was pursuing her Doctor of Education in Nursing.
Tracy was a woman of faith and friend to many. She was ready to serve and support at
a moment’s notice.
She leaves behind her beloved Coco, aunt, Darisee Culp, (Godfrey, who she
affectionately called Santa Claus), uncle, John L. Culp, Jr. (Nanette); uncle, Ernest
Relford Sr., and a godson, Warren L. Mills IV and a host of cousins, other family
members and loving friends.
